PROMOTION POLICY

The purpose of the rank system is to stimulate the desire to progress further, to build up self-confidence, to monitor your progress, and to lay emphasis on specific techniques, so that higher-level techniques and methods of training can be introduced in a systematic way. Promotions serve as mid-range goals, which help us to stay on track with our training. They provide an opportunity for your instructors and classmates to reward and acknowledge you for your efforts and improvement.

Promotions also allow your instructors and classmates to acknowledge themselves for the contribution that they made to your training. Don’t forget how they assisted you in class. They let you punch at them and they gave you arms and legs to block for your experience and training. They waited patiently while you forgot and stumbled and blundered, - - - and they gave you feedback so you could give an outstanding demonstration. Be clear that no one owes you a promotion just because you have paid your fees and had perfect attendance at the last 85 classes, - - - rather it is you who owe us a masterful performance, - - - and when a promotion is granted, it should be received humbly and gratefully.

Promotions are awarded on an individual basis by an individual test of knowledge and ability. Although there is no attendance or time requirement for promotion, your class attendance and participation is certainly considered. Promotions are also based upon the degree of improvement (relative to each student’s own, unique potential), amount of effort, self control, and discipline demonstrated in your daily lives as well as at the Karate Dojo. In other words, it takes more than just attending formal classes. You will have to practice and train regularly on your own and it is easy for us to see if you are doing so.

You must earn your promotion according to our standards.

Locust Grove Karate Promotion Guide

Testing for belts at Locust Grove Karate is an honorable event. As such, each student will have passed all required steps prior to the promotion. In addition to these steps, Sensei will review each student's performance prior to the actual testing date and give any necessary corrections. These corrections must be checked off before the demonstration will take place.

The beginning of the demonstration will start with the students lined up in order by rank. Sensei will announce “Attention”. Sensei will then instruct the student to bow, return to “Ready stance” and begin. Each belt testing will begin with the introduction (in Ready stance) . This is to inform anyone who is viewing the demonstration what rank each student will be testing for. If there are multiple students testing at the same time, each student will say their intro before testing begins.

The requirements that follow will depend on the belt level being tested for. The student will say what section of the demonstration they are on (still in Ready stance) and then begin with the techniques. Sensei will count for Junior students unless prior notice has been given. After each section of the demonstration the student will return to Ready stance and announce the next section.

Sensei will close the demonstration by saying, “Attention” and bow. Then, any further announcements or comments will be made prior to handing out the new ranks.

Below are the requirements for all Junior belt levels
